He is the pioneer in the premium pet food industry in India being the first person to import premium quality dry pet food into India in 1995. He started Ruskin Pet Products in 1995 and first imported dry pet food under the brand of Bento Kronen from Versele Laga, Belgium. He subsequently imported Royal Canin (France) in 1996 to become their sole distributor for India. He was largely instrumental in educating vets and pet owners alike as well as promoting and positioning of the brand as the leader in the premium pet food segment in India taking the sale from 0 to 600 tonnes. Even today, Royal Canin remains the No. 1 brand in the premium pet food segment thanks to the spadework done by Uday. In 2005 he sold his stake in Ruskin Pet Products as Royal Canin was taken over by the global food giant Mars Inc. and wanted to start a 100% owned subsidiary in India. He was the first to import bird food and small animals food and supplements in 2005 from Versele Laga, Belgium into India thereby introducing yet another facet of pet care to the Indian market. In 2005 he created another first by importing pet health supplements in a highly palatable soft nugget form from USA. In 2010 he launched a comprehensive line of companion animal health supplements, the Petraceuticals range, addressing most of the health issues commonly seen in companion animal veterinary practices. He was the first to introduce a lactogenic supplement, Lacto+ meant for nursing animals in the companion (pet) animals sector. Another product, Immuno+ is the only sub-lingual immunity booster for pet animals currently available. Through the Petraceuticals range, new categories have been created in companion animal health care- Liver Support, Immunity Booster & Lactation Support. In 2012, another first in the pet care segment was the launch of ‘paraben free’ and ‘neutral pH’ herbal shampoos under the brand of Tender Loving Care. In 2016, he launched the Vetscription range- the pharmaceutical range- being the first to use ‘Digluconate’ as a molecule for skin care shampoo and a dewormer using ‘Fenbendazole’ for companion animals.
